Ping Yeung Mural Village – Defending Homes in Northeast New Territories

Rainbow Village in Taichung and Ihwa in Seoul both have mural villages that attract visitors. In 2014, Ping Yang Village in Fanling worked with international volunteer organisation Voltra and invited volunteers from various countries for art workcamps. Murals were painted on the walls and paths to bring a creative and colourful mural village to Hong Kong.

The murals are designed in diverse styles. Large murals can be seen on many village houses and walls. Small pictures were painted on footpaths, including cute Minions and Japanese manga character Totoro. The trees were decorated with mobile art installations using aluminum cans, attracting many visitors to take pictures.

The origin of the mural village is the “Northeast New Territories Development Plan” proposed by the government a few years ago. Faced with village demolition and forced eviction, the villagers formed “Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Homeland Defense Alliance”, hoping to attract public attention to their plight through creative mural art. Ping Yeung Mural Village stood out in this endeavour.

Transportation: From Exit C of Fanling Railway Station, take 52K green minibus or 79K bus to Kau Kee Store stop and walk along the trail next to the store for about 5 minutes.
