按照Helga Nowotny送給讀者的book mark："The more we acknowledge uncertainty, the less threatened we feel by it"，我們要敢於面對未來，擁抱不可預知的變化，那才是最好的處變不驚的做人道理。她說的不是soundbite，Helga現身說法，透過她的個人傳記，道出她過往大半生，那80多年，她是怎樣面對考驗，而又能迎難而上。
Helga說要寫一部傳記，但不是英式的傳統傳記，由童年講起，成長期間的際遇，包括婚姻、家庭、事業、成就。她要寫"an intellectual memoir"，書寫她如何一生保持着好奇心，"obsessed with the quest for innovation"。活了那麼多年，Helga仍然年輕，因為她仍有好奇心，仍有創意。她說："Curiosity is one of the driving forces behind scientific activity and the arts"。
面對將來需要智慧
傳記該怎樣寫？Helga說「以知識為核心的memoir，最好就是自問自答」。Helga覺得自己是最了解自己的了，下筆的時候，又要能夠把自己抽離出來，保持客觀。問的是我，答的又是我，保持中立，冷靜是必須的，不能感情用事。
Future Needs Wisdom，我們面對將來，需要智慧。Helga在學術界的遭遇，經歷過不少挫敗。身為女性而遭受排斥，她並無怨言，而是用自己的實力，包括她研究的課題、她的分析能力。Helga交出來的，都是見得人，擲地有聲的論文，確定了她在學術界的地位。
傳記最好看的部分，不是Helga如何從一所大學轉到另一間大學，繼續她的研究，也不是提及她怎樣在仍是以男性為中心的大學學術界， 她如何憑她的識見，脫穎而出。
文章好看，是因為文字帶有真摯感情，不是只有冰冷的數據、理論。Helga說要客觀，冷靜，述說她的80年歲月，是怎樣度過的。她梳理自己一生的日子，字裏行間，仍然可見她的個人情懷、信念，自然流露出來。其中又以她的序言「自己訪問自己」，最能打動人。Helga既懂得問問題，又知道怎樣回答。"Good questions can be good enough questions"，可不可以這樣說："Good answers can be good enough answers"？
從混沌中梳理出秩序
Helga的研究，最後集中在social science。有這樣的講法："Mathematics deals with the perfect, Physics deals with the optimal, and Biology with the satisfactory"。Helga在2017年她的論文指出："Social sciences deal with the messy"。這些年，她就是希望從混沌中梳理出秩序來。
開始的時候，Helga說："Regarding the future, it is important to know the past but equally important to be able to leave it behind"。我們明白了過去，就可以把它放下。
面對將來，Helga說我們不會失去未來的，因為"There is no predetermined future, only a future that is as radically open as it is inherently uncertain"。
這是一個新時代："We have embarked on a co-evolutionary trajectory between humans and digital machines"。
AI工具相繼出現，日趨成熟。Helga說，不要覺得人類受到威脅了："Embracing uncertainty will not restore us to being in control, but hopefully it will enable us to learn to live with the digital Others in a common world yet to be made"。
