Government Continues to Divide Society and Create Tension

The “No China Extradition” fiasco has yet to be been resolved. Chief Executive Carrie Lam who has not made public appearances for 11 consecutive days, has not yet responded to the strong demands of the people of Hong Kong. Lam had a close meeting with the Beijing-influential Hong Kong Friendship Association. She insisted that she would not step down, will not conduct an independent inquiry and no amnesty, thus totally unresponsive to the public’s demands.

Pro-Beijing lawmaker Christopher Cheung has been accused of using a debate adjournment request to effectively block efforts by democrats to prevent part of the Central Harbourfront being given to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). As a result, the former public space was transferred to the PLA on Saturday, 29 June.

Pro-democracy legislators have said the move by Cheung will only anger more Hongkongers ahead of the annual July 1 pro-democracy march.

The “Alliance on Protection of the Harbourfront”,  composed of a number of non-governmental organizations, has condemned the move.  The Alliance believes that the Government has unnecessarily given a public space to the PLA  and created legal traps that seriously harm the public interest and public safety. This act by the government and the pro-establishment legislators will only create contradictions and tension in the society. Lam had promised that the reclaimed harbourfront space was for the public to enjoy. Now she has blatantly reneged her promise and sacrificed the interests of the people of Hong Kong.

The government refused to respond to the people’s demands, and protest actions had continued. Some netizens called for  protest at the Golden Bauhinia Square on 1 July. In response, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) requested shops and restaurants adjacent to the Golden Bauhinia Square to be closed for three days until July 2. A large number of huge barricades have been deployed around the Golden Bauhinia Square. Several exhibitions currently held at HKCEC are forced to close prematurely and HKCEC is in “lockdown”.
